New Vice-Chancellor for University of Kashmir | Search committee submits list of 3 to Guv, 2 outsiders, 1 local in fray | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Aug 27: The search committee formed to select the new Vice-Chancellor for University of Kashmir has zeroed in on names of three persons for the position. The names have been submitted to Chancellor of the University, Governor Narendra Nath Vohra. Sources told Early Times that out of the three shortlisted candidates two come from outside with the third being the incumbent interim Vice-Chancellor of the varsity, Professor Ali Mohammad Shah. It is quite likely that the final decision would be taken by the end of this week with the new Vice-Chancellor likely to assume the office very soon. "Expert search committee comprising of three former vice chancellors--Prof Goverdhan Mehta, Prof A M Pathan and Prof Solanki had invited 11 aspirants including six professors from outside the state for an interaction on August 2. All the short listed applicants had given power point presentation at New Delhi before search committee," said sources. The sources said that after the interaction the search committee held closed door meeting at New Delhi and shortlisted three candidates for the position of Vice-Chancellor, University of Kashmir. The names have been sent to Chancellor and it is quite possible that the decision would be taken in next two or three days. "Besides Professor Shah the other shortlisted candidates are Professor S W A Naqvi, Director, National Institute of Oceanography, Dona Paula, Goa and Professor Javed Naim Agrewala Scientist E1, Immunology Laboratory Institute of Microbial Technology, Sector 39-A, Chandigarh," said sources. Sources said that Professor Naqvi because of his strong credentials is the hot favourite to become the new Vice-Chancellor of University of Kashmir. However, if politics creeps in then the incumbent interim Vice-Chancellor, Prof Shah may become the Vice-Chancellor since he is a close relative of Pradesh Congress Committee President, Professor Saif-ud-din Soz. "Prof A M Shah, Prof Ghulam Mustafa Shah, Dean College Development Council, Prof Javaid Sheikh, Prof Khurshid Andrabi and Prof Neelofar Khan were the five local aspirants who were called for interaction by the search committee constituted by the Governor and pro-chancellor, Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah," said sources. Sources said that some 42 academicians from various streams had submitted their CVs before the search committee set up for the purpose and out of this 11 were shortlisted for interaction. |
