Incessant rains submerge city centre, power goes off in many areas | | | Majid Nabi SRINAGAR, Sept 3: Incessant rains that continue here since last evening have thrown life out of gear as the major roads across Kashmir valley including summer capital Srinagar swamped with water while most of the city areas plunged into complete darkness causing huge inconvenience to Aam Aadmi. Rainfall no doubt is a natural phenomenon, but this observable fact has watered down the tall claims of the state government of providing better infrastructure including Bijli Pani and Saddak as vital roads interconnecting various districts are inundated with rain water which poses serious threat of road accidents. Srinagar city where Babus choose to stay during hot summers is swamped with rain water and at the same time there is no respite to the valleyites to come out of the absolute gloom."We cannot describe in words that what sort of complexity we are experiencing since last evening, on one hand we cannot move outside due to nonstop rainfall while on the other power failure has added to our affliction," Riyaz Ahmad Bala a city resident told Early Times. Power supply in many city areas remained suspended since Tuesdayevening with people blaming authorities for chaotic situation. Rain water, along with sewage water, accumulated on most of the roads and streets, also made its entry into residential houses at HMT, Parimpora and Mahjoor Nagar areas. Within an hour of the showers, there was chaos on almost all arterial roads of the city as traffic signals did not function properly while as choked drains flooded the roads triggering street quarrels. The constant rainfall left many parts of the valley flooded; however traffic remained heavy on some arterial roads although no major snarls were reported from anywhere.Rain created pools of water on major city roads, causing hours long traffic jams on Boulevard Road, Sonwar, Batwara, Pantha Chowk, Maulana Azad Road, Residency Road, Exhibition Crossing, Batamaloo, MA Link Road and other entry and exit points. Most of the roads in old city localities were inundated with rain water, exposing gloomy picture of the poor policies of the departments concerned. A large number of people were seen pushing their vehicles and motorcycles out of the knee-deep rainwater at trendy Polo View Market, near the GPO and around the State Bank at posh Residency Road, and other areas. |
