Law School holds S&S 19th Stetson international environmental moot court competition | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 30: The Law school, University of Jammu successfully hosted the Indian national rounds of Suarana and Surana (S&S) 19th Stetson international environmental moot court competition. The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences Kolkata was adjudged winner of this competition whereas Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Punjab Patiala were runner up. This competition is the oldest, largest and most prestigious moot court projects in India since the mid 1990s.This event began on Friday with Vice chancellor Jammu University, Prof. R D Sharma inaugurating it. The competition has witnessed record participation from 28 teams of the best law schools of the country who came here to battle it out and earn the coveted winners place in the competition. The host Law School Team is also invited to participate in the Final Rounds at Stetson college of Law at Florida.On the second day of Moot Court Competition, 28 teams comprising of three members in each team, participated in the preliminary rounds in fourteen court rooms After preliminary rounds, 16 teams out of 28 teams qualified for the Octa rounds. After Octa Rounds eight teams qualified for the quarter finals. The participants indulged in intense mooting within these rounds resulting in 4 teams from 8 making it to the Semi-finals. After three rounds of intense mooting, these teams strived hard to qualify for the semi- finals. Two teams qualified for Final Round. The teams were assertive, argumentative and persuasive in their approach. The top four teams will represent India in the International Finals at Florida in March 2015. The Stetson University has agreed to invite the host institution, the Law school this year in addition to the top four teams to the international finals. Thus, in the end India National Rounds of 19th Stetson International Environmental Moot Competition(2014 -15) was a glorious event with an intellectual experience for all the students and the participants. West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences Kolkata-- Winning team Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Punjab Patiala-- Runner up team; National Law University, Jodhpur- 3rd Rank; NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad-- 4th Rank; Best speaker of Finals-- Sanchit Shiva Kumar, WBNUJS, Kolkata; Best Memorial-- Gujarat National Law University; Best Student Advocate-- Sagnik Das, NLUI, Jodhpur. The State Information Commissioner, Dr. S K Sharma, was chief guest on the valedictory function. He encouraged the students to participate in the moot court events regularly so that their argumentative skills are harnessed properly. Prof. Arvind Jasrotia, Dean, Faculty of Law and director, The Law School, in his welcome address stressed upon the students to take a holistic view on the global issue of global environmental issues which was a recurrent theme in International Moot court competitions. Dr. Seema Sharma, Moot court coordinator for this competition read the report of the moot competition of the three days. Dr. Seema Rohmetra, Assistant Professor, The Law school presented the vote of thanks. |
