Water woes add to miseries in Rajouri, department fails to restore defunct schemes

Rajouri, Oct 23: Many areas in Rajouri district still facing acute shortage of safe drinking water either due to relaxed approach of the Public Health Engineer (PHE) department employees towards duties or due to ill-planning of most of the PHE schemes which either got damaged in the floods or the water sources got dried up.
People alleged that the PHE department failed badly even in repairing/ making functional the water supply schemes which were damaged due to flash floods in 2014 or in the 2005 devastating earth quake.
"Despite several requests and representation to the concerned PHE officers or to the senior officers at district headquarter/ sub division headquarters, nothing has been done to mitigate the problems of the people in getting safe drinking water" said Roshan Lal of village Saryala in Sunderbani.
Recently inhabitants of Taral & Beri hamlets held protest before the office of Deputy Commissioner alleging that for the last more than three months no water was supplied by the PHE department through its pipes to the people of these areas.
"Due to some technical snags water the supply was stopped in our area and despite several requests the official concerned didn't bother to mitigate our problem and people are forced to collect contaminated water from natural sources after covering long distances in the scorching heat waves, said Mohd Farooq.
ADC assured the people to find out from the senior PHE officials that why the department has stopped the water supply and will also direct them to restore it soon.
People assured ADC their full cooperation to PHE officials but also warned large scale protest demonstration in case the water supply was not restored soon.
Similarly inhabitants of many helmets in Kalakot tehsil including Gurhi , Tibalnara have alleged that no water was supplied to them by PHE department for the last six months.
Surjeet Singh, AEE said that some pipes have been damaged in the area and concerned employees have been directed to restore the water supply without any further delay.
Inhabitants of Guni in Nowshera tehsil have alleged that the department has not been supplying water to the inhabitants of their Panchyat for the last more than twenty days. They said despite hollow promises the employee of the PHE department did nothing to restore the water supply.
They warned a large scale agitation in case the water supply was not restored within next few days.
" Soon the matter will be discussed with the concerned Junior Engineer and he will be directed to restore the water supply at the earliest" said senior PHE officer.
