US tells Pakistan to dismantle terror camps
10/23/2016 11:05:38 PM
It is a tall order from the US to Paki
stan. What is the tall order? Washington has asked Islamabad to delegtimise all terror groups in Pakistan so that the establishment in Islamabad besides the Army and the ISI ensure there no safe haven for terrorists in Pakistan. But since Pakistan continues to get political and military support from China Islamabad seems to ignore US suggestion. Many countries including India have been telling the same to Pakistan but for the last 30 years neither the arms training camps for terrorists were shut nor there was any significant improvement in the use of soil of Pakistan for exporting terror to India, including Jammu and Kashmir. Well Pakistan believes that as long as Islamabad carries proxy war against India the issue of Kashmir will remain alive in the international for a despite being alive various developed nations have asked Pakistan to stop exporting terror to India and opt for dialogue with India. Even the UN has suggested to mediate between Pakistan and India as for as the resolution of the 99-day old turmoil is concerned.
The US has told Pakistan to go after those terrorists who seek and "sometimes find safe haven" in the country and delegitimise all terror groups operating on its soil. Washington continues to urge Pakistan to take action to combat and delegitimise all terrorist groups operating on its soil, The way the US has given this suggestion indicates it is no less than a warning because Washington does not want India to fall in the lap of Russia after Modi-Putin talks prior to which the two sides had signed a deal for a 400 dollar anti-missile defence deal. Obviously Pakistan has suffered baddly at the hands of terrorists and violent extremists. Washington wants to help Pakistan confront this terrorist threat, but the US also want Pakistan to go after those terrorists who seek and sometimes find safe haven on Pakistan territory.
US remarks come amid heightened tensions between India and Pakistan following the Uri terror attack in which 19 Indian soldiers were killed and India's surgical strikes on seven terror launch pads across the LoC on the intervening night of September 28 and 29.Earlier this week, in a clear indication of its support to India's surgical strikes in PoK, the US said it empathises with the Indian position that it needs to respond militarily to terror threats and dubbed the Uri attack as a "clear case of cross-border terrorism. The US had also called for greater cooperation and dialogue between India and Pakistan to bring down the recent tensions and said that they should adopt a "conciliatory approach" to resolve their "contentious issues". Since India has announced that it will not revise the Indus Water Treaty and review the Most Favoured Nation status granted to Pakistan in 1996 this should make Pakistan understand that India wants to promote cordial ties with Pakistan. As far as military might is concerned India has shown that it has the upper hand and this should force Pakistan to accept the US suggestion.
