Kishtwar saffron-growers undergo huge loses, demand compensation
11/24/2016 10:12:32 PM
Early Times Report
Doda, Nov: 24 Pochhal area is world famous for producing unique variety of Saffron. But this year the yield has suffered because of insufficient rains. Saffron growers here have incurred huge losses this year and are in dire need of economic assistance from the state govt. Like all other crops saffron has also a low yield forcing the farmer community to ask for help from the govt.
These farmers also allege that govt has always failed to look after their interests and Agriculture deptt has done little to improve farming facilities and welfare of farmers in the mountainous belt. They called it criminal negligence since people are overwhelmingly dependent on agriculture for meeting their daily needs. Farmers who have taken loans from KCC are finding it difficult to repay the debt.
They have demanded waiving of loans or at least lowering of interest rates. Farmers also protest against the fact that govt is yet to fix the market rate of saffron. It remains to be seen how state govt reacts to this crisis situation in this remote region and takes proper action for welfare & encouragement of saffron industry here and takes steps like fixing of rates.
It is pertinent to mention here that due to the casual approach of the government towards the growers their interest in the cultivation of this rare produce is becoming less and the time is not far when it will become a practice of the past.
Moreover this is the only place in Chenab valley where saffron cultivation is done and people by and large depend on this cash crop.
