Under -16 selections marred by bitter controversy | More shame for JKCA | | Parents lodge complaint with PMO
Abodh Sharma Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 5: Selection of the state under sixteen cricket team the previous day has brought more shame to the Jammu and cricket association, which has already been marred by gross financial irregularities, bitter factionalism, administrative anomalies and nepotism. The parents of the budding cricketers alleging favouritism and complete lack of fairness and probity in the selection process have brought the matter to the notice of Union minister in PMO, Dr Jitendra singh. Sources disclose to the eT that the selection committee of the JKCA for the under sixteen team was hijacked and overpowered by the office bearers who had vested interests and the merit was completely ignored to select their relatives and children. "It was an exercise to get their own children and relatives in to the team at the cost of the meritorious players" informed a parent. "Can you imagine that the office bearers who were not part of the selection committee hijacked the meeting and got their own children in?" exclaimed the parent alleging complete anarchy in the selection process. Another parent divulged that the joint secretary of the JKCA from Jammu, who had been associated with the players, had prepared his list looking objectively into their performance during the camp and practice matches, but at the eleventh hour, this list was trashed and the joint secretary was ousted from the meeting by a gang of powerful office bearers who came out with a list of 32 players, with as many as 12 stand byes and their own children and relatives included in the list of 20. There are umpteen names who performed well with bat as well as ball, but were completely ignored and under 14 players, who were wards of influential office bearers were wrongfully accommodated in the team. Sources also disclosed that the gang of JKCA office bearer also ignored the recommendation of a senior Minister of the coalition government, even though the said player had performed reasonably well and deserved a place in the team. It is not the first time that the selection of the state team in any age group has been marred by controversy as nepotism, favouritism, corruption and political and muscle power have become the hallmark of JKCA working. Sources disclosed that the aggrieved parents travelled to Kathua, where MoS in PMO, Dr Jitendra Singh was presiding over a public function. "We have brought the gross nepotism and corruption in the JKCA into the notice of the Minister and he has assured to get the matter investigated", a parent told eT.
