Early Times Report

srinagar, Jan 11: Various vital roads which were macadamized only a few years ago have been damaged as JCB's which were engaged by the R&B (PWD) have caused cracks in these roads in several areas of Kashmir valley. Dozens of vehicles got damaged on the busy Srinagar-Chadoora -Charari Sharief road since Friday morning as authorities failed to put into service its snow clearance machines. Local residents are aghast against the Government for their lukewarm attitude. People have demanded that snow clearance work be undertaken under MG-NREGA as well so that roads in villages are thrown open for public transport.
Details available with Early Times reveal that JCB's which are used for excavating soil were engaged by the R&B in almost all the districts of Kashmir valley aftermath of heavy snowfall that closed dozens of vital roads in Kashmir valley. Reports from Budgam district reveal that Surasyar Bonen Batwodder road has been damaged at several places as JCB instead of clearing the snow has further damaged it. Locals say that JCB in addition of removing the snow, created big potholes and cracks on the road. In the nearby Kutabal area the road heading towards Goggee Pathri Nilnag and Buzgoo has also been damaged at several places by the JCB which came to remove the snow few days back...
In Shopian district also there are complaints about JCB's damaging the roads " Govt instead of providing snow clearance machines / vehicles send JCB's for snow clearance , but they destroyed the roads in several areas of our district " said Fayaz Ahmad a re
The JCBs pressed into service by the R&B for snow clearance have damaged roads that were macdamised recently.

In some areas of Charar Sharief snow is yet to be cleared especially in upper reaches like Wangwas area. The locals say that snow was not cleared from their area until Tuesday 4pm. In Jabbad Zildara area of Chadoora snow is yet to be cleared from the roads.
After a long dry spell this winter, Kashmir valley has witnessed heavy snowfall. The heavy snowfall will have a positive impact on agriculture, and horticulture in the state as the water level in the rivers, lakes and streams is going to increase drastically. The increased water level in Chenab, Jehlum, Sindh and other rivers will also increase and this will help in the power generation capacity of the hydroelectric power projects operational in our state as well. The snowfall which indeed has positive impact, on the other hand has also added to the hardships of the people as the snow has not been properly cleared. In many areas the JCBs and snow clearance machines have just compressed the snow instead of removing it. "The compressed snow which has become very hard due to dip in night temperatures . These roads are very much icy and vehicles are not able to move as the roads are very slippery" Farooq Ahmad of Dara Harwan
"Why cannot the department of Rural Development be also roped in and got involved in the operation snow clearance? We have an important centrally sponsored scheme Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act ( Scheme) (MG NREGA) and the snow clearance work should be undertaken under this scheme as well" said Mushtaq Ahmad Lone of Bonen Chadoora
