HC orders fresh census of transgenders in J&K | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Sept 5: The State High Court today directed state government to conduct fresh census of Transgenders in the state within a timeline, specifying their geographical distribution so that they can be brought into mainstream. The direction were passed by a division bench of the court after the court was informed that as per 2011 census more than 4000 transgenders live in Kashmir which face marginalization and are disowned by their families. The counsel for the petitioner submitted that from education to medical facilities, the transgenders are facing difficulties in getting themselves admitted as there is no option available on forms as third gender. The court observed that transgenders are visible minority but yet are treated as invisible. "We are informed that no fresh census has been undertaken since 2011," the court said and directed that census of transgender community be taken with a given timeline. "The census must also include geographic distribution of transgenders population to address any marginalization so that they can be brought into mainstream", the court added. |
