Swamy new 16 Corps Chief

EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Oct 17: Lieutenant General RK Swamy, AVSM, VSM has assumed command of the prestigious 16 Corps from Lieutenant General RK Karwal, SM**, VSM today. He was commissioned into the MAHAR Regiment in Nov 1971. Immediately after commissioning the General officer participated in Operations in Rajouri Sector and was well baptaized in combat, wherein he personally led a number of successful combat missions deep into enemy territory. The initiation into active combat immediately after commissioning was a harbinger to the future course of the General officer in the Army, wherein most of his appointments as Formation Commander, Battalion Commander and Staff were in active operation oriented environments.
The General officer has an extremely distinguished service profile. He has commanded his battalion and brigade in the Eastern Sector and a Force Headquarters in the Northern Sector. He has attended the important Higher Command and National Defence College courses and has had coveted instructor and staff tenures at Infantry School, Mhow, Defence Services Staff College, Wellington. The General officer has been awarded the AVSM on 26 Jan 08 and VSM on 26 Jan 03. He is also the Colonel of the MAHAR Regiment since Sep 04.
Lieutenant General RK Swamy is an avid lover of carnatic music, art and literature and is well travelled both in India and abroad. He patronises various institutes of cultural excellence including the prestigious Madras Music Academy. The General officer has rich knowledge on medieval and modern history and is a keen sportsman.
The General Officer is happily married to Mrs Shobhana Swamy, who espouses the general’s penchant for the army way of life with even greater vigour and emotion. Mrs Swamy is herself a product of the elite Kalakhetra Academy and has made a niche for herself on the national and international scene in the field of performing arts.
The General Officer is not new to the state having last been here from 2002-2006 and he highlighted his resolve to ensure complete peace and prosperity in Jammu Region. He wished the people of J&K the very best and reiterated to follow the principle of “Healing Touch” with populace as the Centre of Gravity.
