Elections Not That Far Away | | | The Special Summary Revision of electoral rolls in Jammu and Kashmir has been finalized and more than 7 lakh new voters have been added to the list. The revision of electoral rolls is the final step before elections are held in any State or the Union Territory. Now, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has to take a call on announcing the polling date in Jammu and Kashmir as everything including delimitation has been completed. The redrawing of assembly constituencies has brought Jammu region at par with Kashmir vis-à-vis distribution of seats. It’s for the first time in the past 70-years that Jammu will have an equal say in the government. Till 2014, when the last assembly elections were held in J&K, Kashmir based parties used to call the shots and these formations never allowed any Dogra to become a chief minister of J&K. After the abrogation of Article 370 political scenario in J&K has changed completely. Political parties which used to believe that they could get away with anything have realized that they have to face a Herculean task in the coming days. Preparations for the polls have been finalized and now it’s the matter of time before elections in J&K UT would be held. But the politicians will find it difficult to lure the voters as J&K has witnessed unprecedented development during the past three years. The administration led by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has set new governance benchmarks and the changes are visible on the ground. The politicians are excited that the polls will be held soon but they have to understand that they can no longer sell the old wine in a new bottle. Some have already started promising that they would get back Article 370, but the fact is that it’s just a slogan. Earlier, they used to contest elections for safeguarding Article 370 and now they are doing it for restoring it. They are once again trying to take refuge in rhetoric and are repeating the same mistake which they committed in the past. Time is running out for them. Political parties need to set their house in order before the poll bugle is sounded otherwise they won’t find the things easy. |
