Natrang stages world classic 'The Bear' in English in Sunday Theatre Series

JAMMU, Feb 2: Natrang staged a new English play 'The Bear' written by Russian playwright Anton Chekhov here today at Natrang Studio Theatre under its weekly theatre Series 'Sunday Theatre'. Presented by Natraj Natya Kunj and directed by Balwinder Pal Singh, the play captivated audiences with its exploration of themes like love, pride, social satire, and the absurdity of human behavior. With its sharp wit and emotional undercurrents, The Bear successfully brings to life Chekhov's keen observations of human nature, leaving the audience both entertained and reflective.
The Bear by Anton Chekhov explores themes of love, pride, and transformation. The story unfolds in the drawing room of Mrs. Popova's estate, where she has been mourning the death of her husband for seven months and has sworn off all social interaction. Her solitude is disrupted when Grigory Stepanovitch Smirnov, a debt-ridden landowner, arrives demanding payment for a debt her late husband owed him.
Popova refuses to pay, and the two engage in a heated argument. Smirnov, determined not to leave until he is paid, insists on staying. The confrontation intensifies as they try to outmaneuver each other, with each displaying their stubbornness and pride. However, despite their initial hostility, a mutual attraction begins to develop between the two. Smirnov, who has always believed women to be foolish, is caught off guard by his growing feelings for Mrs. Popova. Likewise, she begins to see a different side to Smirnov beyond his gruff exterior.
As the tension between them escalates, it eventually turns into an unexpected declaration of love. The play concludes with Mrs. Popova and Smirnov embracing, marking the transformation of their antagonism into love.
The artists who participated in the play included Balwinder Pal Singh as Smirnov, Deepshikha Sharma as Papova and Amit Bhalla as Luka. The lights of the play were designed & executed by Neeraj Kant whereas the music of the play was scored by Kartik Kumar. The show was coordinated by Mohd. Yaseen.
