Omar accused of bias in treating human tragedies of two regions | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Sept 13: Omar's step to call Navy divers from Delhi to search out the body of a Kashmiri medical student from Mansar lake here has been widely hailed, but at the same time, he has come under severe criticism for his alleged bias while dealing with similar human tragedies in Jammu. As Syed Zuhaid Rizvi's wallet and some other belongings were found lying on the Mansar lake bank on May 14 last, he was suspected to have drowned in the lake waters. His body, however, could not be fished out by the Navy divers from the state. Few days back, the chief minister requested the Centre to send expert Navy divers from Delhi who could search out the Rizvi's body. On his request, six Navy divers reached Mansar Saturday. They searched for the body yesterday and today, but could not find any trace of it. Appreciating Omar's this "goodwill" gesture, BJP MLA Ashok Khajuria hoped that the missing student's body would be recovered soon and handed over to his parents, but at the same time, he alleged that his response was not the same to similar tragedies in Jammu. He said two girls of minority community were reported to have drowned, or jumped into Chenab river at Paddar in Kishtwar under similar circumstances, but the chief minister had not thought it proper to engage Navy divers for their search also. This showed that Omar was biased towards Jammu in dealing with the incidents of human sufferings, the BJP leader regretted. The two Paddar girls -- Sapna, daughter of Nand Lal, and Sangeeta, daughter of Janki Nath -- were suspected to have "jumped" into Chenab on July 12 after their chappals and other belongings were found lying on the river bank at Paddar. As they were alleged to have ended their lives following their humiliation by police, Paddar had witnessed violent protests with locals attacking the police station and cops. Khajuria felt that Omar ought to have also shown the same concern in the case of the two missing girls. A senior police officer of Kishtwar, however, said it was not yet clear if the girls had drowned in Chenab, or had gone into hiding after their alleged humiliation by the Paddar police station cops. BJYM state executive member Narotam Sharma said Omar was chief minister of the whole state and not of the Kashmir region only. He should take interest in the Paddar incident too so that the bodies of the missing girls, who belonged to poor families, were also recovered. |
