Centre to reconsider Omar’s demands | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 14: Union government has decided to reconsider demand of the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for repeal of AFSPA and withdrawal of troops from civilian areas of the valley. Official sources said that the decision to reconsider the issues was result of Omar's threat of quitting if his demands were e not conceded. Soon after coming out from his meeting with Prime Minister in New Delhi on Monday, Omar did not conceal his anger and told some of his close associates that he would quit if his demands were not conceded. He is said to have explained to the central Government that AFSPA was as good as a red rag to the bull and people believes that in the absence of the AFSPA, security forces may not have legal shield for indulging in alleged human rights violations. Official sources said that soon after Omar Abdullah's threat to quit reached PMO, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and others decided to reconsider the issues and do something which could motivate Chief Minister not to execute his threat. Omar Abdullah is not indispensible but losing him at this juncture could create added problems when there was no suitable alternative to him, centre believed to have said to those seeking his ouster. They added that separatists would treat it as their victory if Omar resigned. Indications are that the Prime Minister has conveyed his willingness to concede Omar's demand so that if AFSPA was diluted or withdrawn from some areas in the state at a later stage, it could be construed that it was done because of the pressure mounted by Syed Ali Shah Geelani.
