Kashmir situation alarming: Advani
9/15/2010 12:05:03 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
NEW DELHI, Sept 14: While BJP leader LK Advani today defined situation in Kashmir as “alarming”, Janata Party president Subramaniam Swamy demanded imposition of President’s rule in the state and handing over of law and order to army.
The two leaders said the state administration had totally collapsed in the state.
Terming the situation in Jammu and Kashmir as “alarming”, Advani said the state administration had “completely collapsed” and the UPA government was about to “capitulate” before Pakistan-supported secessionists.
On the eve of the crucial all-party meeting convened by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to discuss the situation in violence-hit Kashmir, he opposed any dilution of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) or withdrawal of troops, saying it would mean “surrendering before Islamabad’s strategy of breaking India’s unity”.
Attacking the state and central governments, he said “the mess in Kashmir” was not the making of only the Omar Abdullah government but the UPA government was also “totally clueless and spineless.”
Addressing a BJP workshop in New Delhi, Advani said, “Each passing day strengthens our apprehension that the UPA government is about to capitulate before Pakistan-supported secessionists.”
The BJP leader said there is talk of a “political solution” to the Kashmir issue.
“Instead of giving a fitting reply to the secessionists, the government has been demonising the security forces. There is continuing talk of diluting the AFSPA, and withdrawal of the forces!
This is nothing but a surrender before Islamabad’s strategy of breaking India’s post-1947 unity,” he said.
Meanwhile, Swamy in Chhenaidemanded imposition of President’s rule in Jammu and Kashmir and handing over of law and order to army. “It is only the valley in the state which is under the grip of violence unleashed by anti-Indian Jihadi forces,” he said adding that Jammu and Ladakh regions were unaffected.
He said now was the time to decisively end speculation over whether India would negotiate with terrorists and other anti-nationals.
After imposing President’s rule, the Centre should restore the religious demography of the state as required under Article 370 of the Constitution, as demography was disturbed because five lakh Kashmiri Pandits and Sikhs had been driven out, he said.
Swamy said the government should recruit five lakh ex-servicemen and they should be settled in the valley, with their families being given adequate funds to meet expenses and wespons to defend themselves.
