12/20/2020 12:30:52 AM

Opender swaroop

He changed the traditional attire of Women from Pheran to Saree to integrate with India, Widow remarriage, girl’s education and vegetarianism in weddings.
18th December the Punya tithi , Nirwan Diwas of great political leader and greatest Social reformer of Kashmiri Pandits Bul bule Kashmir Pandit Tara Chandji, Kashyap Bandhu.
Born in 1899, as Padit TaraChand Kashyap Bandhu ji after his education took a job but left for Lahore to achieve something worthwhile. He came under the influence of Arya Samaj and joined Vrijananda Ashram in Lahore.
He returned to Kashmir in 1931 and along with Pt Shiv Narayan Fotedar and Jia Lal Kilam started an organisation Yuvak Sabha at Sheetalnath in Srinagar. He started the Newspaper Martand and was its first editor. He revolutionised the Kashmiri Pandit society and some of the most difficult tasks he undertook were:
WIDOW REMARRIAGE : Young Widows had to suffer and he carried a movement for their remarriage and many young men came forward to marry the widows
PHERAN TO SAREE ( Dhoti)
During the period of early thirties, sarees and salwar kurtas were non-existent. Pheran was the common dress for Kashmiri Pandit women. This dress was responsible for lethargy and laziness. Bandhuji requested the women folk to change the dress and start wearing sarees and that too khadi sarees. There was resistance initially but he and his volunteers started visiting each and every house and requested the women to change the dress. His efforts bore results and today saree and salwar kameez have become the normal dress of our women folk.
Vegetarian Meals in Marriages : He propagated austerity in weddings. But his major emphasis was on observing the day of Kanya daan as vegetarian meal to be served in that occasion.
True to his belief and conviction he transformed the Kashmiri pandit community for betterment and emanicipation.
