Unemployment rate on decline in J&K, claim officials
People turn assertion as hoax, ground situation unchanged

Early Times Report

Jammu, Aug 8: The Jammu and Kashmir administration has been claiming that unemployment rate in the union territory is on decline, but many people are not ready to buy this claim.
According to the officials the unemployment graph has fallen from 19.6% to 10.6%. “Many schemes have been announced to address the unemployment crisis in J&K. Besides creating new job opportunities, loans have been provided to youngsters to set up business units and shops,” said, an official.
He said that the employment scenario in J&K has improved during the past two years and efforts are on to address this burning issue.
An analyst while talking to Early Times said, “Claim of the J&K Government that unemployment rate is on decline is strange. During the past two years businesses have suffered due to COVID-19. Many units have winded up their operations and many people working in the private sector have lost their jobs.”
“During the past two years posts have been announced but the recruitment process is still on. It has not ended. The government is claiming that jobs are being provided but the fact is that all the processes are still confined to papers only,” the analyst added.
He said, ‘It seems that the officials are misleading the Lieutenant Governor by providing him with the wrong statistics. In the recent past we have seen unemployed dental surgeons hitting the streets and many others joining them. LG Sinha is a man of his word and is making all the efforts to expedite the employment process but it appears that he is being fed with the wrong figures. Had the unemployment rate witnessed a decline we would not have seen the professionals staging protests on the streets.”
An observer said, “Former J&K Governor Satya Pal Malik had announced that 50,000 youth will be provided employment but his announcement proved to be an illusion. Few months ago the government admitted that only 18000 jobs have been announced during the past two years. Mere announcements are not helping anyone’s cause. These are adding to the confusion and false hopes have disappointed the youth.”
