CM ignores Sher Pathri village in his constituency | RBA status on political considerations | | early times report SRINAGAR, Jan 30: The State Government has drawn flak for according Rural Backward area status to various areas on the basis of political considerations while ignoring the genuine areas. According to sources the villages situated on roadsides having all basic facilities of life have been given the backward status while the delinked and secluded areas have been totally ignored for the political considerations by the coalition Government. One such glaring example is Sher Pathri area in Ganderbal district of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's constituency. The Sher Pathri which is about three kilometers away from Ganderbal township lacks all basic facilities of life. The area comprising of 34 villages having a population of 50,000 with about 25,000 voters has been totally ignored by the Government despite being a fittest case for declaring as RBA. The Lar area in Ganderbal was given a tehsil status and also declared as RBA when it has all the basic facilities while the Sher Pathri being the marshy land was ignored altogether, said Ali Mohammed Lone a local resident and a social activist. Lone said that many areas were declared backward by State Government which have all basic facilities of life while Sher Pathri which sans the same has been ignored for unknown reasons. He said various villages including Rabitar, Kurd, Aatkhuroo, Gund Roshan, Sandut, Sehpora, Shalbok has no proper facilities of road link. The area being a marshy has less agriculture land as well and the people are totally dependent on labour said Nazir Ahmed. The people of the area are artisans making Kashmiri baskets and doing embroidery work. But this occupation has not also thrived as it has been subjected to exploitation by middlemen who take the maximum benefit of it after exploiting the artisans, he added. Falling in the Assembly segment of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah the area failed to get justice in last five years of his rule also, said Ghulam Mohammed Lone an artisan. He said that no one is ready to hear the woes of the people who are living in abject poverty. Mir Ghulam Rasool Butwani a veteran Trade Unionist and Peoples Conference leader who visited the area and met a cross section of the people there demanded a probe that why this rural belt has been deprived of backward area status when villages situated on highways have been accorded this status. He said the area was to be given the RBA status much earlier than other localities of the district Ganderbal but it is not known why it was ignored. He demanded a block office and Naibat in the area so that the people of this belt can get equal opportunities of upliftment, he added.
