Early Times Report
srinagar, Nov 21: In a major setback to State Congress, Usman Majid the candidate for Bandipora did not welcome party President, Sonia Gandhi who arrived in the town to seek support for him this morning.
No reason for Usman’s absence from the rally was given. However, senior leader Monga said he stayed away from the rally because of Election Commission of India's directions.
Sonia Gandhi, Ambika Soni, Ghulam Nabi Azad and State Congress vice President, Ghulam Nabi Monga today reached North Kashmir's Bandipora district to address an election rally. While more than 7000 people had assembled to hear Sonia, the candidate for whom she had travelled from New Delhi was conspicuous by his absence.
Pertinently Bandipora along with rest of the constituencies of State is likely to go to polls on November 25 and Usman Majid is considered as one among the strong competitors for State Congress in Kashmir valley.
Former Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad also addressed the rally.
Sonia accused Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) of playing politics over providing relief to flood victims saying the ruling party at the Centre promised the sky but did not follow it up with action at ground.
Quoting some examples of past, Sonia said that during UPA rule the Central Government went all out to provide every possible support to the victims of the 2005 earthquake that affected vast areas along the Line of Control (LoC), particularly in Uri sector of Baramulla district.
"BJP leaders would more often visit Jammu and Kashmir after floods and promised a lot but you know what they did," she said.
Meanwhile, Monga told Early Times that Usman stayed away because of ECI guidelines. "You can confirm it from the ECI," he said.
