Fearing defeat, NC unleashes misinformation campaign against PDP | Kashmir's Election Scene | | Rustam JAMMU, Mar 30: One thing is absolutely clear: The ruling National Conference (NC) has lost the people's confidence in Kashmir and the opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP) all set to snatch atleast two Lok Sabha seats from the NC. That the PDP is standing on a strong wicket and the NC, which won all the three Lok Sabha seats in 2009, has lost its sheen and appeal and is at the receiving end could be seen from a number of pre-poll surveys. Almost all the pre-poll surveys, including the latest one conducted for ABP News by Nielsen, have said that the ruling coalition in the state would not repeat its 2009 performance and at least three seats are going to the opposition. It is obvious that the PDP in Kashmir and the BJP in Jammu are likely to upset the ruling coalition's applecart and capture a minimum of three seats out of a total of six seats. The findings of the survey appear tenable considering the prevailing political scenario in the state. ABP News broadcasted the pre-poll survey on March 27, 28 and 29 and it predicted 233 seats for the BJP-led NDA, 117 for the Congress-led UPA, three for the Congress and its ally in Jammu and Kashmir and three for the opposition parties, including the BJP and the PDP. That the NC-Congress leadership is not confident of victory could also be seen from the fact that the NC has unleashed a misinformation campaign to give the people to understand that the PDP and the BJP are anti-Kashmir and that a vote for the PDP would be vote for the BJP. How ridiculous! The PDP and the BJP have nothing whatsoever that is common between the two. The PDP advocates self-rule for the state and talks of accommodation of Pakistani view on the state. The BJP, on the other hand, opposes even Article 370 and wants New Delhi to adopt a very strong stand on Pakistan. Of course, it is true that the PDP leadership has during the past few days expressed views which appear quite soft as far as the BJP and its PM candidate Narendra Modi is concerned and there is nothing wrong with it. Didn't the NC join the BJP-led NDA and share power in the BJP-led NDA Government? It remained part of the NDA for many years and also shared power with the BJP for a couple of years. It was none other than Omar Abdullah who occupied a Ministerial berth under Vajpayee. All this should serve to indicate the direction in which the political wind is blowing both in Kashmir and Jammu. The NC and Congress would do well to discard negative campaigning and, instead, contest the election on democratic and economic issues. |
