As ISI masterminds fake currency racket in J&K, govt gets ready to deal with menace | High level committee formed as inputs suggest that J&K is becoming hub of fake currency | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Nov 29: Watch out, you may be holding a fake Rs 500 or Rs 1,000 currency note. Ever since the Pakistan's infamous ISI has been masterminding the fake currency racket in J&K, the problem is getting bigger and bigger. The fake notes are smuggled into the state from Nepal and the J&K borders with Pakistan. Infiltrating groups of militants too carry fake IC notes with them. This was first discovered after the troops had recovered a large quantity of the fake notes from the ones killed by them on the LoC in Poonch sector some time back. To deal with the menace, the state home department has constituted a high-level committee vide its order No 534. It would be headed by DGP K Rajindra. Its other members included commissioner of customs department, RBI's deputy general manager, DIGs of Jammu and Srinagar wings of CID, DIG of crimes and IB officers. The team members would find out ways and form strategies to counter the fake currency racket in the state. Steps would also be taken to identify and book the fake currency sources and operators in the state. Sources said the ISI and Pak-based terror outfits were mainly dependant on fake currency to run the terror infrastructure in J&K and elsewhere in the country. Certain security features of the template were also alleged to have been stolen from the country some time back to enable the printing of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes, the sources added. Sources said the Rajindra-committee would also coordinate with the national investigating agencies to find out if the ISI's Indian contacts were running the fake currency racket in J&K. Quoting intelligence inputs, sources said much of the fake currency was being printed at Pak government presses in Quetta, Lahore and Peshawar. Sources said once the notes "are printed, the ISI smuggles them to Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Agents hand over these notes to the ISI operators who smuggle them into J&K and other Indian states where it is exchanged on a 2:1 basis. That is, two fake notes are exchanged for one genuine note". As women "are often used to smuggle the fake notes to lower suspicion at border checkpoints, the Rajindra-committee would be ensuring that women entering the state from Lakhanpur and airports in Jammu and Srinagar are put to thorough checking," sources said. Crores of fake notes were said to be in circulation across the state. Sources put this number at estimated Rs 1,60,000 cr at the national level. "Apart from funding terror operations, the fake money is also used in real estate transactions," sources claimed. |
