In absence of passenger sheds scorching heat, humidity make people sweat | | | G S Asgotra Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 21: Imagine a wait of 10-15 minutes for a bus in the scorching heat and humidity that make people sweat under the open sky. Due to the failure of the department concerned to construct proposed hexagonal passenger sheds on Satwari-Kunjwani road, people continue to suffer. It at times becomes unbearable for them to stand under the sun in wait for a bus. On the Kunjwani-Satwari Chowk stretch, hundreds of commuters and students can be seen craving for a shelter to fight the sweltering heat. At the time of road widening, R&B department had announced to construct hexagonal passenger sheds at busy places on the Kunjwani-Satwari road, but ironically no shed was made even after the completion of the road widening project. "Due to non existence of the passenger sheds, the daily commuters, school going children and senior citizens, besides women, are facing hardships both during summers and winters. We feel embarrassed while taking shelter under the sunshades of shops to save ourselves from the scorching heat or rains," said Neelam Sharma, a commuter. The widening of road was started in 2011 and completed in 2015. One year has passed, but the department has still not initiated the work on construction of passengers sheds mentioned in DPR. Shalani Singh, also a commuter, said the chief minister, who herself was a woman, should understand this problem and take steps to ensure the early construction of passenger sheds. She appreciated the CM for announcing a separate bus service for women. "Even the JMC's passenger sheds in the city are no more in the use of commuters as these have turned into shelter sheds for animals", Suresh Kumar said and added even the passenger vehicles 'don't stop outside these sheds'. The proposed sites for the construction of passenger sheds on Satwari- Kunjwani stretch include Satwari, Shastri Nagar Chowk, Digana Puli, Digana Ashram, Gangyal and Kunjwani. |
