9/24/2016 11:10:52 PM
Early Times Report

Rajouri, Sept 24: Resident of Darhal and from its adjoining areas have been facing acute shortage of safe drinking water for the last more than one year as most of the Water Supply Schemes (WSS) either have turned non-functional or were damaged in the flash floods.
Pertinently, Darhal valley is blessed with natural water resources and fresh water streams but due to ill planning by the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department engineers most of the dug wells and reservoirs were washed away in the 2014 flash floods and since then the people are left to the mercy of Almighty.
Ironically since then department has failed to restore many such damaged Water Supply Schemes and due to casual approach of the officials of the PHE department, people of the area suffering badly.
"People are forced to fetch water from the natural resources after covering long distances. There are reports that many people especially children have fallen sick due to contaminating water during recent rainy season," said Karamat Malik , social and political activist.
Today (on Saturday) people of the area held protest demonstration against the district administration and PHE department and demanded immediate restoration of water through PHE department schemes.
Led by Karamat Malik protestors warned the authorities to block the Rajouri-Darhal road if the department fails to supply safe drinking water within a week's time..
Inhabitants of some wards of village Triyath in Kalakot tehsil have also alleged that for the last more than two months the water supply to their area has been snapped reasons better known to concerned officials. They alleged despite several representations to the concerned PHE officials nothing has been done in this matter till today.
Ashok Kumar, Sita Ram and other villagers said that not only people are suffering but the students in the area suffering a lot as the water supply to these schools too stands snapped.
Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) PHE when contacted briefly said that the matter was not brought into his notice. "I will direct the concerned junior engineer to visit the area and restore the water supply immediately" said AEE.
