Gujjar, Bakerwal stage protest against Forest Minister | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 9: The Gujjar and Bakerwal (Nomads) of Districts, Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Udhampur, Reasi today held a massive protest against the Forest Minister, Choudhary Lai Singh at Press Club, Jammu for demolishing their residential houses by the Forest Department. The nomads were raising slogans against the Forest Department and its Minister Choudhary Lal Singh. The nomads alleged that they have been residing in these areas since the times of Maharajas and have been using the postures for grazing of their catties. They further alleged that the officers/officials of Forest Department without an prior notice have demolished their huts/kucha houses and even some pacca structures from the land in their possession. The land under their occupation does not belong to Forest Department. It is pertinent to mention here that in the various decisions of Advisory Board for the development of Gujjar and Bakerwal taken under the Chairmanship of successive Chief Ministers, it was decided that the Nomads will not be dislocated from their present locations. The protestors further alleged that in some areas of the above said districts, the cases of nomads for regularization of land under their possession are pending in the offices of respective collectors for regularization. The Gujjar and Bakerwal (Nomads) further demanded the extension of Central Forest Act for the settlement of Nomads on the Forest land, the protestors have been demanding stern action against the Forest Ministers and officers of Forest Department. |
