Keep stress at bay for healthy heart: Dr Sushil

JAMMU, Oct 16: Realising the need to boost the morale of the security forces who are working under extreme stressful conditions due to constant tensions on borders, Dr. Sushil Sharma along with his team of doctors, paramedics and volunteers held a day long health check up cum awareness camp at BSF Camp, Paloura. The Camp started with a lecture on "Stress and Cardiovascular diseases ,Possible Causes and Prevention '' by Dr. Sushil Sharma .It was inaugurated by Shikha Upadhaya, President BWWA and Kamlesh Ram Avatar, Vice- President BWWA, Frontier HQ BSF Jammu.
During his lecture Dr. Sushil Sharma stated that mental, Physical and Social healths are vital strands of life that are closely interwoven and deeply interdependent. Stress affect people of all countries and societies, individuals at all ages from urban and rural environments. Stress causes a number of biological changes and is intended to activate the body's fuel reserves .The soldiers are no exception except that they are comparatively in an ideal stress breeding environment due to frequent and large number of uncertainties vis -a-vis civilian counterparts with similar service conditions. Most concerning and alarming fact is that we witness lot of jawans these days with coronary artery disease and cautioned the jawans that the moment they experience symptoms of heart ailments it is advisable to consult the doctor inspite of following the habit of wait and watch, he added.
Continuing in the same vein he maintained that particularly (constant) stress can negatively affect ones health and can cause issues relating to heart. When we are stressed, there is increase in sympathetic drive. In response to this drive, the heart beats rapidly and begins to pump a greater quantity of blood with each beat. It may damage the wall of the arteries. Moreover, stress may influence heart diseases in more subtle ways. "Stress does cause some people to act in ways that increases their risk of heart diseases, "Dr. Sushil said.
