Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Oct 16: With terrorists carrying out couple of attacks on security forces in different areas in the outskirts of summer capital in the past one week or so the Jammu & Kashmir Police as well as security agencies are up against a big challenge.
With militancy getting a revival during the 100 days of unrest in Kashmir there are chances that an upsurge in terrorists activities may be witnessed in the coming months. Officers of the different security agencies have already said that many youth have joined terrorist ranks over the past three months or so in Kashmir and that it is no less than a challenge for them.
The South Kashmir district of Pulwama which was considered to be one of the peaceful districts of valley has of late turned as a hot-bed of terrorist. Scores of youth in this district have joined militant organizations and the same is being viewed as a concern by the people manning the law & order situation. Not only less educated, but even qualified and that too professionals have joined the ranks of terrorist.
With the police and security forces personnel busy in handling the law & order situation in Kashmir during the present unrest the terrorists got a chance to increase their strength in the valley. Since anger has been brewing against the government due to the 'aggressive' policies many of the youth joined the ranks of terrorists and same has come up as no less than a challenge for the various security agencies.
The presence of terrorists in the protest rallies and processions in different areas of South Kashmir in the initial days of present unrest conveyed a message that the future months are going to be tough for police and security agencies. Although, the militants were asked to keep away from such rallies by their leaders sitting across the Line of Control the same had no impact on them and they continued to make their presence felt.
Although, the police and security agencies erected barricades in order to stop the entry of terrorists to Srinagar, but still then the terrorists managed to enter and then engage the security forces in separate encounters at Pampore and Zakura in the past week. While Pampore is located in Pulwama district in outskirts of Srinagar, Zakura is an area of Srinagar district.
The gunfight at Zakura is somewhat significant since the area is considered to one of the secure zones of the Srinagar district. An encounter has hardly broken out between terrorists and security forces in the Zakura as well as adjacent areas in the past decade or so. The presence of terrorists in the Zakura area has given an impression that the summer capital of the state is also not free from terrorists in the present day context. This does not augur well and there are chances of more encounters in the coming months.
