Violence levels along LoC on decline : Army Chief | Of 71 terrorists killed in J&K, 35 eliminated in hinterland | | New Delhi, Jan 29: Indian Army Chief General Manoj Pande on Monday said that violence levels have come down in the last year along the Line of Control (LoC), adding that the army will relentlessly pursue its operations to counter terrorists alongside the LoC and hinterland.
In an interview with news agency, the Army Chief informed that “a total of 71 terrorists were eliminated in Jammu and Kashmir, of which 35 were in the hinterland and another 36 as a result of successful counter-infiltration operations” in 2023.
When asked about the measures and the overall security situation along the Line of Control, the Army Chief said, “Violence levels have come down. However, you mentioned the recent spurt in activities in Rajouri and Poonch. We have strengthened and reoriented our deployment both along the Line of Control and anti-infiltration obstacle systems as well as in the hinterland.”

| | Ban on SIMI extended for 5 years | | | NEW DELHI, Jan 29: The Government on Monday extended the ban imposed on terrorist group Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) for five years for its involvement in fomenting terrorism and disturbing peace and communal harmony in the country.
In a post on ‘X’, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that bolstering Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of zero tolerance against terrorism, SIMI has been declared an ‘Unlawful Association’ for a further period of five years under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).
The SIMI was first banned in 2001 when the Atal Bihar Vajpayee Government was in power and since then the ban has been extended every five years.

Baramulla, Jan 29: Jammu and Kashmir Police have booked two persons under the Public Safety Act in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district for their alleged involvement in anti-national activities. The duo were shifted to Kotbhalwal Jail Jammu.
Police identified the accused as Fayaz Ahmad Kumar alias Narshima of Khanpora Baramulla and Safeer Ahmad Bhat alias Safeer Molvi of Janbazpora Baramulla.

SRINAGAR, Jan 29: Many areas in the higher reaches of Kashmir received fresh snowfall, while the plains were lashed by rains on Monday, even as the minimum temperature settled above the freezing point at most places in the valley, officials said.
The ski-resorts of Gulmarg and Gurez, and higher reaches of Kupwara in north Kashmir received fresh snowfall on Monday, the officials said.
They said the Sonamarg tourist resort in the Ganderbal district of central Kashmir also received fresh snowfall.

Jammu and Kashmir Disaster Management Authority (JKDMA) on Monday said a “low danger” level avalanche is likely to occur at 2600 and 2800 metres above sea level in the higher reaches of Kupwara and Ganderbal districts in the next 24 hours.
