More than 10 lakh from Jammu alone, 24 lakh live below poverty line | Its official now; previous regimes make JK India's Poorest State | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 4: The union government has an uphill task in hand- to get the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir along with its people from abject poverty and reverse the previous trends that kept showing JK as one of the poorest states of India.
As per the official documents, the poverty has been an inseparable feature of Jammu and Kashmir since 1947 and the successive regimes made little effort to ensure that the people reeling under duress could witness any dawn of prosperity. BPL estimated ratio of Jammu and Kashmir are at at 21.63 percent which comprise of 24.21 lakh of which 26.14percent (22.00 lakh persons) are from rural areas and 7.96 percent (2.21 lakh persons) are living in urban areas.
According to the union government's survey, the absolute poverty has shown an increase from 19.05 lakh rural, 1.86 lakh urban and 20.92 lakh combined in 1993-94 to 22 lakh, 2.21 lakh and 24.21 lakh respectively till in 2007-08.

srinagar, Oct 4: The Indian Army's maiden recruitment drive held in Kashmir since the abrogation of article 370 on Aug 5, 2019 has drawn "historic" response from the aspiring to join the defence services.
On Oct 3, the recruitment drive held by the army here post abrogation of the special status drew huge response with over 2000 youth turning up to become soldiers to serve the nation.
Official said the drive was for the close relatives and blood relations of the ex servicemen from the Army.

Srinagar, Oct 4: Even as the government is observing Wildlife week, the focus is more on publicity than increased man-animal conflict which have claimed around sixty lives across Jammu Kashmir in the past three years.
Giving reasons for what he called `disturbing trend' an official of the Wild Life Department said : "Denudation of forests, encroachment on forest land and vanishing buffer zones force animals to move towards villages where they come across human beings and the results are before us."
