Cong leadership eyes fresh faces for upcoming Assembly elections | | |

Jammu, Aug 10: As the countdown for the maiden Assembly elections in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir has started with the visit of the high-level team of the Election Commission of India, Congress leadership is seriously thinking about fielding young candidates on the majority of the constituencies to counter BJP.
Highly placed sources said that during the meeting in Delhi on Thursday, AICC general secretary (organization) K C Venugopal discussed the issue with some senior leaders and it was suggested that young candidates should be fielded as many as possible seats.
“Youth leaders who served in important positions will be given the opportunity to contest the elections in place of “old guards” as there is feeling among high command that new faces must be tried in the Assembly elections”, sources said.

Gujjars, Bakerwals oppose Paharis’ claim on ST seats | Say Pahari ethnic tribe, can’t contest polls from reserved seats | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 10: Although the Pahari ethnic tribe and other groups have been granted Scheduled Tribe status, some groups of Gujjars and Bakerwals on Saturday asserted that these new groups are not eligible to contest elections on the Assembly seats reserved for STs.
Gujjars and Bakerwals claimed that tribes, who were granted Scheduled Tribe status in 1991 were eligible for contesting elections on the seats reserved for the ST.
While addressing a press conference, leaders of the All J&K Gujjar-Bakerwal Organisations Coordination Committee only the ST groups classified as ST-I are eligible to contest the reserved ST seats in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections.

Srinagar, Aug 10: Two Army personnel were martyred and three others injured in a fierce gunfight with terrorists at a forest in a remote area in Anantnag district on Saturday, officials said.
The incident occurred at Ahlan Gagarmandu forest in the Kokernag area of the south Kashmir district during a cordon and search operation that was launched following information about the presence of terrorists there, they said.

The Centre has extended the deadline for the Ravi and Beas Waters Tribunal to submit its report by another year, moving the deadline to August 5, 2025.
