Rahul's J&K visit focuses on forging pre-poll alliance with NC | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 20: Even as leaders of both the parties have maintained a guarded silence over ongoing talks on seat-sharing, the visit of Rahul Gandhi along with senior Congress leaders are aimed at forging pre-poll alliance with the National Conference.
Sources said that for the last two days, senior leaders of both the parties have been engaged into discussions to finalize seat-sharing agreement. “There is still stalemate over number of seats the NC is going to vacate for the Congress in Kashmir Valley”, sources said and added that every thing would be cleared within a day or two.
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, and Congress President, Mallikarjun Kharge, will be
visiting Jammu and Kashmir for two days starting Wednesday.

Jammu, Aug 20: Within hours after the party leadership announced mandates for candidates for the Assembly elections, the Peoples’ Democratic Party faced defection as three senior leaders resigned from the party.
Parliamentary Board of the PDP has cleared names of 13 candidates for the first phase of Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir.

Srinagar, Aug 20: Jammu and Kashmir Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) arrested a Village Level Worker (VLW) for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000 in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district. ACB on Tuesday said it received a complaint on the helpline number from a resident of village Kukrossa, Kupwara in which the complainant alleged that he is a very poor person and a house under PMAY was sanctioned in his favour by the Block Development Officer, Vilgam.

SRINAGAR, Aug 20: The Centre has so far deployed nearly 300 companies of paramilitary forces for election duties in the Kashmir valley, officials said on Tuesday.
The companies have been deputed in Srinagar, Handwara, Ganderbal, Budgam, Kupwara, Baramulla, Bandipora, Anantnag, Shopian, Pulwama, Awantipora, and Kulgam, they said.
As many as 298 companies of paramilitary forces, including Central Reserve Police Force, Border Security Force, Sahastra Seema Bal, and Indo-Tibetan Border Police, have been deployed for the providing security for the smooth conduct of the assembly polls in the Kashmir valley, they added.

JAMMU, Aug 20: The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) on Tuesday paid tributes to inspector Kuldeep Kumar, who was martyred in an ambush by terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district, officials said.
A wreath-laying ceremony was held at the headquarters of the 187th battalion of CRPF in Battal Ballian of the district in which Additional Director General CRPF Amrit Mohan Prasad and other senior officers of various forces paid tributes to Kumar.

MENDHAR/JAMMU, Aug 20: Twelve people, including two each of school children and women, were injured when a rabid dog attacked them in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district on Tuesday, officials said here.
According to the officials, the incident took place in Mendhar town of the border district between 8 am and 8.30 am.
Among the injured were also a few migrant labourers, they said.
A total of 12 dog bite cases were reported, with three people sustaining serious injuries, a doctor at the sub-district hospital said.
All the injured have received anti-rabies vaccines and the three with severe bites have been admitted to the hospital for observation, the doctor said.

SRINAGAR, Aug 20: Two back-to-back earthquakes jolted Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday morning causing panic across the Valley, but there were no reports of loss of life or damage to property, officials said.
The first earthquake of magnitude 4.9 on the Richter Scale struck at 6:45 am at a latitude of 34.17 north and a longitude of 74.16 east at a depth of 5 km with the epicentre in Baramulla district of north Kashmir, the officials said.
