Jammu, Aug 27: A friendly contest between the National Conference and Congress on the Banihal assembly segment is a clear indication that the leadership of the Grand Old Party failed to protect the political interests of its former president Vikar Rasool Wani.
Sources said that Vikar Rasool Wani, who was unceremoniously removed as J&K Pradesh Congress Committee chief on August 16, tried his best to avoid a friendly contest at the Banihal assembly which had won in 2008 and 2014 assembly elections but failed in his effort.

SRINAGAR, Aug 27: National Conference leaders Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah on Tuesday said the seat-sharing arrangement with the Congress was done with the aim of taking on the BJP as a consolidated front, and form a Government which will try to address problems of the people.

JAMMU, Aug 27: The BJP on Tuesday named 29 more candidates for the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly polls, taking to 45 the number of seats for which it has announced its nominees.
The party has fielded Devender Singh Rana from Nagrota and named Satish Sharma as its candidate from Billawar, which was represented by former deputy chief minister Nirmal Singh in the last assembly polls held in 2014. Expressing concern over encroachments on national and state highways, the Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH) to constitute different teams for frequent and regular inspections of the roads for unauthorised occupations.

The Union government is considering significant amendments to the Names and Emblem (Prevention of Improper Use) Act, 1950, to strengthen the law and deter violations.
Sources within the government said the proposed changes include substantial increases in fines and the introduction of imprisonment for offenders. Under the current law, violators face a mere Rs 500 penalty for improper use of certain emblems and names, as stipulated in Section 3 of the Act.

JAMMU, Aug 27: A group of Village Defence Guards opened fire on observing suspicious movement in a village in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said on Tuesday. The guards noticed two unidentified persons near the house of a political activist at village Meira-Nagrota, eight km from Rajouri district headquarters, late Monday night, the officials said.
Security forces cordoned off the village and carried out searches following the incident but there was no trace of the suspected persons.
