PDP had worked out a 'secret deal' with Jamaat-e-Islami

Early Times Report

Jammu, Aug 12: Fall of PDP-BJP government in Jammu and Kashmir has pinched the activists of Jamaat-e-Islami as the security agencies have launched a massive crackdown against them in the Valley.
Sources told Early Times that during the PDP led government in the state Jamaat activists enjoyed the complete political patronage and carried out their activities without any fear. "Security agencies were very well aware about their activities but were unable to act against them as the politicians used to get them released," they added.
Insiders revealed that since the day Governor's rule has been imposed in the state the Jamaat activists are on the run. "These activists were leaving no stone unturned to carry forward the indoctrination campaign and put the youth on the path of the radicalization," they added.
Police and other security forces, according to the sources, have launched a massive crackdown against the Jamaat activists in south Kashmir and during the past few days dozens of activists have been arrested during raids.
The chief spokesman of Jama'at-e-Islami advocate Zahid Ali in a statement acknowledged that his party is facing a crackdown and Jamaat workers are being arrested.
Though Jamaat has been claiming that it's not affiliated with any militant outfit but it's an open secret that Hizbul-Mujahideen is directly linked with Jamaat. Many youth who have joined the Hizbul in the past few years were kin of Jamaat activists.
Sources said that prior to coming into power Jamaat had struck a deal with the PDP that it's cadres would vote for the party and in return the PDP would allow them to carry on their propaganda without any interference. "PDP after coming to power fulfilled its commitment. Besides saving the Jamaat activists from the security agencies many were also provided jobs," sources added.
They said, "PDP being inclined towards separatists pushed Kashmir to edge. During the past two months Governor's administration has pulled the strings and miscreants are being kept at bay."
Insiders revealed that crackdown on Jamaat activists has led to the improvement in overall situation in south Kashmir as the stone-pelting incidents have declined. "On the other hand locals are also shutting their doors at the militants as the fear they had unleashed has reduced. During the past few days militants have abducted many youth, who raised their voice against them, from Kulgam district to ensure that their writ prevails," said a source.
He said that security agencies have been given a freehand to identify the miscreants and act against them. "Many Jamaat activists who were appointed during PDP led regime have been put under scanner and their activities are being watched," the source added.
