Hong Kong 26-0, breaks 86-year old record | | | Agencies New Delhi, Aug 22: The Indian men's hockey team continued their impressive run at the Asian Games 2018 as they thrashed Hong Kong 26-0 in the Group A encounter in Jakarta on Wednesday. This was their highest victory margin in an international competition with the previous best being a 24-1 win over USA in the 1932 Olympics. Rupinder Pal Singh was the top-scorer for India with five goals while Harmanpreet Singh and Akashdeep Singh contributed with four and three goals respectively. Lalit Upadhyay, Varun Kumar and Manpreet Singh were not far behind as they scored two goals each. The rest of goals were scored by Sunil SV, Surender Kumar, Vivek Sagar Prasad, Amit Rohidas, Chinglensana Kangujam, Mandeep Singh, Simranjeet Singh and Dilpreet Singh. The record for biggest win in international hockey remains with New Zealand, who beat Samoa 36-1 in 1994. This was India's second big consecutive win in this year's competition as they fired 17 goals past Indonesia in their first Pool A match. At that point, the 17-0 win is India's best record at the Asian Games with their previous best being 12-0 win against Bangladesh in 1982. The year 2018 has been a mixed one for the Indian men's hockey team. They started the year with a disappointing run at the Sultan Azlan Shah Trophy with just one win in the group stages and followed it up with a fourth-placed finish at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia. However, the team bounced back from their average performances and under the guidance of new coach Harinder Singh, produced a brilliant performance in this year's Champions Trophy. PR Sreejesh & Co were quite impressive in the group stages and in the final, they were narrowly defeated by Australia on penalties. The Indian women's hockey team is also playing brilliantly in the Asian Games as four players scored a hat-trick each to defeat Kazakhstan 21-0. The Indians narrowly missed the all-time Asian Games record of 22-0 - a feat achieved by the Indian team against Hong Kong 22-0 in the 1982 Games. |
