Robotics in Knee Replacement - Tested, Proven and the need of the hour!
8/31/2018 9:51:17 PM
Dr. Avtar Singh

"My husband wanted to
get back to his daily runs after his knee replacement surgery. But that didn't happen. We got his operation done at one of the most renowned surgeon's centre, who does thousands of surgeries every year," says 63 years old house wife and a mother of two, Mrs. Zahida Suleman (name changed). Her husband, a retired banker, Mr. Afzal Khan Suleman (name changed) underwent a total knee replacement 3 years ago. Mrs. Suleman went on to explain, "His surgery went well and my husband is still active. But he still has some muscle pain and has limited movement. He is also constantly aware that he has an artificial knee implant. Hence 4 months ago, when it was my turn to get my knee replacement done, I was really scared. But honestly, I can't be happier with the results of my surgery!"
Mrs. Suleman is one of the hundreds of happy patients to have successfully undergone a Robotics-assisted knee replacement surgery, since the launch of the internationally proven Robotics Surgical System in India almost a year ago. Originally developed in the US and approved by the US FDA after elaborate clinical assessments for years, Robotics system today is assisting surgeons across 250 centres in the US, Europe, Australia and India, with thousands of patients benefiting every year from its advance software and Artificial Intelligence (AI) that helps these surgeons in delivering patient satisfaction of the highest level.
Her operating surgeon and the World's First Robot Assisted Knee Replacement Punjabi Surgeon & Director of the Department of Orthopedics, Amandeep Group of Hospitals, Dr. Avtar Singh explained, "Though conventional joint replacement is a very successful and safe procedure, roughly 20% out of the nearly 1,50,000 operated patients every year are still unsatisfied with their outcomes. That is close to 30,000 unhappy patients due to residual pain, restricted mobility and an overall compromised lifestyle. Why does that happen despite skillful surgeons, cutting edge tools and great hospital infrastructure in non-robotic surgeries? It's because there is still a lot of room for improvement to overcome human error margins and complex patient conditions. That's where Robotics and AI come in. They don't replace a surgeon. They merely assist the surgeon to ensure that there is no room for error and surgeons can achieve optimum results with highest patient satisfaction, every single time, in every type of joint in every patient, every day."
The Robotics surgical system for knee replacement helps create a precise image of the knee, using a robotic hand piece operated by the surgeon and relays information to an advanced computer program, in the operating room. The process creates a 3-D model of that joint on the surgical table, eliminating the need for a CT scan or MRI prior to the operation. It allows surgeons the control to create a patient-specific plan in the Operating Room and the confidence to execute with robotic precision.
"The robotics assistance ensures perfect execution of the customized plan. This leads to better implant fixation and longer lasting implant because of perfect alignment. There is less blood loss, no excess bone removal and natural structures are preserved. This leads to faster recovery and pain-free full range of motion, without any muscle strain or instability. The knee feels natural so patients almost forget that a surgery was even done!" says Dr. Avtar Singh.
"The surgery isn't that expensive, thankfully. I was happy to be discharged on the second day and was able to start slow running within a month after good physiotherapy. It didn't feel like I had a surgery at all" added Mrs. Suleman, who has now fully recovered and is happy with the improvement in her quality of life.
"We have always offered the best to our patients at Amandeep Group of Hospitals, and Robotics is scientifically proven and documented in leading international papers to have unparalleled benefits in patients. The Robotics system is the most advanced generation option for both partial and total knee replacement surgeries available today. It provides surgeons the ability to do more than they have ever been able to do with standard instruments, giving better functional outcomes for the patient. As said best - Change for the better is inevitable and the only way forward is to prioritize the patient!".
