Early Times Report

JAMMU, Sept 1: A workshop on the topic Gender Sensitivity was held in DPS Nagbani today by Sangeet Aryan who is also the counselor of the school.
The objective of the workshop was to help the teachers understand what gender inequality is about and to enable them to help build society where girls and boys must give due respect to each other. The workshop opened with a short lively activity to help the teachers explore the basis of their individual perceptions of Gender Roles and how these shape our definitions of appropriate behavior. This was followed by a session in which the teachers reflected gender related labeling and other factors that make our cultures gender sensitive. Issues were explored through role play and discussions.
Through various activities, the teachers were taught that for proper development of the students, it is necessary that they should learn to differentiate the good from the bad so that they can take the right decisions in life.
The workshop referred to the modification of behavior by raising awareness of gender equality. The Gender Sensitivity Workshop was designed to recommend that more efforts are needed to change the culture from predominantly "Male-Centric" to Gender Sensitive i.e., equally supportive and friendly to both men and women. It specified the need to train the teachers to use gender fair language, to communicate more effectively, to promote team work and reduce misunderstanding.
The teachers learned new tools for integrating gender equality and concepts of how to remove gender stereotypes in the field of education. The workshop offered a unique opportunity to learn new gender - sensitive teaching methods.
The Principal of the school R.K. Verma in his address said that teachers inspire and empower - they can also discourage and impose limitations, regardless of whether they are making a conscious efforts to do so. He said that gender sensitivity applies to both the genders and one must learn to respect each other. He concluded by saying that the youth must make an effort to break the stereotype thinking and start valuing others feelings.
