Growing Eve-Teasing in India | | | Vivek Koul
India at present is facing so many evils. One of the worst evil which our country is facing is of eve-teasing which is gaining momentum these days and has become the cause of utmost concern for all of us. India is one of those few countries in the world where violence against women starts in the womb, before the girl is even born. We have to overcome this hypocrisy in our culture. On the one hand, we celebrate Navratri, nine days of fasting for the Goddess, then Durga Pooja. All kinds of goddesses in India are worshipped and praised than in any other culture. But when it comes to our women, daughters, wives, mothers, sisters, we have a completely different standard. This is really ridiculous and very disturbing phenomenon. Eve-teasing is a social curse and is growing like an epidemic throughout our country. The structure of Indian society has always been male dominated. But in modern era, women tried to break the centuries of shackles by venturing into male dominated areas. Though we have grown by leaps and bounds yet the most basic structure of society is showing no signs of improvement. A thorough look at newspaper daily shows us so many incidents against woman. Eve teasing is a one of the huge issue in many metropolitan cities of India. A large percentage of Indian women have faced or facing this menace. Whether it is public transport system or public places or shopping malls or multiplexes, women find themselves vulnerable to the threat of eve teasing everywhere. Eve teasing is a complex problem and it requires more attention that what it actually got. Eve teasing and molestation are problems that women all over the world, especially in India, grapple with everyday. Often, many women are unaware of the laws and regulations that give them protection against such acts. The traditional mindset often blames the eve teasing incidents on women that they provoke males by wearing scanty clothes. That's actually a lame excuse. Even if females wear modern dresses, it doesn't give men license to harass women. The answer lies in changing the mindset and inculcating morals and values in our education system. Dealing with eve teasing has been made further easy by some charity organizations that help women with harassment problems. On a positive note, there are plenty of NGOs in India who are working for the cause of women empowerment. They are teaching women on how to deal with difficult people and how to fight back against the harassment at workplace. Workplace gender discrimination is not a new thing but some prominent organizations are leading the way to rectify the situation. Dealing with eve teasing has been made further easy by some charity organizations that help women with harassment problems. We still have to go a long way to completely rectify the situation. Eve teasing must be stopped. Women deserve respect. Men and women are equal. Our lack of consciousness has lead to a loss of many lives. But we don't want any more lives to say good bye to this world. Women have the right to live freely in the world. Independence is their birth right. They have the right to lead their lives as males. On the other hand, the family and society of the victims or teased girls should have the courage and resolve to support them. Most often, they are misunderstood by their family whenever they inform the family members about teasing. The family and society should support them mentally. So as the govt. must take things seriously. The country wants both of them to be active in such issues. The need of the hour is to have more coeducation schools so men are exposed to women from a very young age and grow to mutually respect each other. Mothers must teach their sons to treat women with respect. A lot has already been done to combat this curse. But we still have to go a long way to completely curb this social issue from the gross root level. |
