Early Times Report

Srinagar, Sept 15: There was a time when it was impossible to retrieve the government land from encroachers. But thanks to the Governor's administration, it is now a reality in Jammu and Kashmir.
On Saturday, reports suggested that the administration in Kashmir Valley has retrieved 2438.20 kanals of state land and 5763.60 kanals of Kahcharai land from the encroachers through extensive anti-encroachment drive which started from August 1, 2018.
As per the reports, all Deputy Commissioners have been directed to use the vacant land for developmental utilization like construction of schools, health centres, community halls, playing fields, panchayat ghars, fire tender stations and other essential services as per demands of local population.
People have been warned not to indulge in illegal construction activities and encroachments on state and Kahcharai land. Violators will be dealt strictly according to the Law. However, what people are asking the government is to make the names of the encroachers public as the speculations are rife that not the common masses but those affiliated to the political groups have been found guilty of grabbing the state land as the Aam Aadmi knows the repercussions of such illegal actions. There are also questions being raised over how come the land has been retrieved during the Governor's rule and why such action was not taken when elected parties were in power. "Why wasn't there such an action during the tenure of the political parties? Why action was taken when Governor is in power," writes a netizen on social media.
There are also pleas being made to the government that it should make the names of the encroachers and those supporting them pubic so that the faces are unmasked and ridiculed in open.
Earlier, this week Social Welfare Department weeded out 8449 ineligible persons in Kashmir division from the list of beneficiaries who were getting pension under National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP) and Integrated Social Security Scheme (ISSS). This information was given at a meeting chaired by Secretary Social Welfare, Dr Farooq Ahmad Lone to review the progress of weeding out ineligible and underserving persons from the list of beneficiaries covered under NSAP and ISSS. The meeting was informed that the weeded out undeserving beneficiaries include 1047 in Anantnag, 900 in Budgam, 278 in Baramulla, 363 in Ganderbal, 523 in Kargil, 370 in Kulgam, 301 in Kupwara, 110 in Leh, 994 in Pulwama, 650 in Shopian and 2777 in Srinagar.
