Infantry cycle rally to commemorate Infantry Day | | | Early Times Report PATHANKOT, Oct 16: Infantry Day is celebrated every year on 27 Oct by the nation in recognition of the first Infantry Battalion landing at Srinagar on 27 Oct 1947 to save the Kashmiri population from the hordes of Pakistani raiders led by Pakistan Army regulars who were ravaging the valley. The landing in the nick of time not only saved the Srinagar Airfield but also ensured that the raiders were pushed back. This year to commemorate the brave Infantry soldiers, a cycling expedition has been organised by all Infantry Regiments from their Regimental Centres to India Gate, New Delhi, as an endeavor to represent the far flung areas of India, where the soldiers who serve the motherland are posted and is symbolic of Indian Army ethos of National Integration beyond the boundaries of State, caste and culture. A cycle rally team comprising one officer and nine Jawans of Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry Regiment was flagged off from Srinagar and another team comprising of one officer, one JCO and nine Jawans of Ladakh Scouts was flagged off from Leh to Delhi. Both the teams reached Pathankot last evening after cycling more than 150 km in a day. The expeditions will traverse a distance of approx 1345 kms from Regimental Centres to Delhi over a period of eight days and culminate at India Gate on 27th Oct 2018 having traversed through J&K, Punjab and Haryana. The teams are also, enthused by a spirit of adventure which pushes a person to go beyond his comfort zone and this sprit is of special significance to robust soldiering. |
