Early Times Report KATRA, Nov 15: The School of Philosophy & Culture (SoPC) of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), Katra celebrated the World Philosophy Day. On this occasion, a special lecture on "Challenge to Reason and the Doctrine of Momentariness" was conducted where Prof. Kisor Kumar Chakrabarti, (Retd.), Distinguished Professor & Chair of Philosophy and Religion, Dept. of Religion & Philosophy, Davis and Elkins College, USA and Adjunct Professor,SoPC, SMVDU, talked about the Greek philosopher Zeno's paradox and 11th century AD Nyaya philosopher Udayanacarya's pratibandha - asiddha argument against the Buddhist doctrine of momentariness. The lecture was attended by the faculty members, students and staff members of different schools and sections. The World Philosophy Day was proclaimed by UNESCO to be celebrated every 3rd Thursday of November which is a speculative date of birth of the famous Greek philosopher Socrates. It was first celebrated on 21st November 2002. Since then the Day is celebrated every year under the leadership of UNESCO. By celebrating the World Philosophy Day, the enduring value of philosophy for the development of human thought, for each culture and for each individual is highlighted. The celebration was concluded with a vote of thanks by Mr. Sumanta Sharma, Asst. Prof., SoPC. Vice-Chancellor, SMVDU, Prof. Sanjeev Jain, congratulated the philosophy fraternity on the Day. |
