HC seeks equal treatment of transgenders in hospitals | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Nov 30: Terming denial of any protection by the police and treatment by the hospitals to transgender as " extremely serious", the J&K High Court has directed authorities to ensure that no police personnel, doctor or hospital administration denies the equal treatment to them. As the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation started, the petitioner stated that they are being refused any protection by the police and treatment by the hospitals when they approach for the same. "It cannot be denied that the matter is extremely serious and rights of persons including the transgenders must be protected. They are entitled to the same protection and medical treatment as any other individual," a division of Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice Sanjeev Kumar. "The respondents shall ensure that no police personnel; doctor or hospital administration denies the equal treatment to the transgenders." Additional advocate general Asif also informed the court so far as the issue of finalization of policy regarding the upliftment of the transgender community in the State of Jammu and Kashmir, the draft policy stands forwarded to the department of Law and Justice and the matter was awaiting decision of the department. "Let this matter receive urgent scrutiny by all the concerned departments of the Government and the report in terms of the orders already passed be placed before us before the next date of hearing," the court said and posted the PIL on December 20. |
