Minimum temperature continue to fall across J&K | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 4: Minimum temperature continued falling across Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday with Srinagar recording its coldest night of the season so far at minus 3.2 degrees Celsius, a weather office said. The minimum temperatures were likely to drop further due to clear night sky as mainly dry weather was expected in the next seven days in the state, he said. Pahalgam was at minus 5.5, Gulmarg minus 4.0, Leh minus 10.6, Kargil minus 9.7, Jammu city 8.9, Katra 8.6, Batote 3.4, Bannihil 2.5 and Bhaderwah 1.3 degrees Celsius. "Drass town in Kargil district which is the second coldest inhabited place in the world had recorded minus 14 as the minimum temperature on Monday," he added. Kashmir valley and Ladakh region continue to reel under intense cold wave as temperatures dipped further at most of the places on Tuesday. An official at MeT Department said mercury plummeted to minus 3.2 degrees Celsius on Monday night compared to previous night's minus 2.8 degrees. This was the coldest night in Srinagar this season. South Kashmir famous hill resort Pahalgam, which serves as a base camp during the annual Amarnath yatra, recorded a minimum temperature of 5.5 degrees Celsius, while mercury at the famous ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir settled at minus 4.0 degrees, he said. Leh in the frontier region of Ladakh was the coldest recorded place in the state with the night temperature dropping to minus 10.6 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature in neighbouring Kargil town settled at minus 9.7 degrees Celsius. The cold wave has intensified over the last few days with sub-zero night temperatures resulting in freezing of water supply lines in several areas. The minimum temperatures were likely to drop further due to clear night sky as mainly dry weather was expected in the next seven days in the state, the Met office has forecast. Reports said bad weather condition and poor visibility resulted in slowing down of traffic movement on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway and other roads in Kashmir. Director Metrological Department (MeT) Sonum Lotus today said that weather in Kashmir will remain dry for next 15 days and temperature will further dip while as there is a possibility of light rain and snow fall in upper reaches on Dec 8 and 9. Lotus said weather will remain mainly dry in Kashmir for at least 15 days but there is possibility of light to moderate rain or snowfall in upper reaches on December 8 and 9. He a said the night temperature will remain below zero. He said in Dress temperature will remain minus 14 degree which will further decrease. He said cold wave will increase in Kashmir and temperature will decrease, people need to take precautions. |
