JRL eats humble pie on ISIS assault on Jamia Masjid
12/31/2018 10:35:37 PM
ET Report

Jammu, Dec 31: Even as the so called Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik on Monday held a meeting at Geelani's Hyderpora residence in Srinagar in the wake of recent desecration of Jamia Masjid Nowhatta by some masked youth waving Islamic State flags, the separatist leaders ended up eating a humble pie. Sources said the leaders at the meeting amicably admitted that it was an open secret that some youth in Kashmir had been showing growing affinity towards the Islamic State and that Jamia Masjid and Hurriyat leadership had been their frequent targets. Sources said given the threat from the IS supporters, the JRL thought not to make any big confrontation with the gang lest they openly attack them.
Sources said the JRL leaders agreed that the IS supporters have become an open challenge for the separatist leadership.
Sources said the leadership had asked Mirwaiz to openly ask the people on upcoming Friday prayers that anyone found waving IS flag should be caught by the volunteers and handed over to the police.
But the Mirwaiz is understood to have told that he couldn't make any such provocation lest his coming to Jamia on Fridays becomes as threat.
"He(Mirwaiz) told them (Geelani and Malik) that for the last three years he had failed to get rid of the IS supporters whose number is growing with each passing week," the sources said.
They said given the threat from the Islamic State, the group asked Geelani to pick up the issue with the Hurriyat G Chairman Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai to issue a statement against the ISIS. "Many of our leaders have been previously assaulted by the supporters of the IS and so we want to avoid any further confrontation that can put our lives to risk," said a source in the JRL. He said given the hidden threat from the IS, the JRL leaders finally decided to tell media that the meeting was not called in connection with the Jamia Masjid incident but that to discuss some other issues. "Basically they wanted face saving lest face embarrassment over IS," said a source.
"We have conveyed to media to report that the Jamia Masjid incident was not the main agenda of the meeting but that it was discussed during sidelines," said a source privy to the meeting.
Meanwhile some of the JRL leaders are likely to visit Jamia Masjid on Thursday.
