Army 'celebrates' terror crackdown but Omar Abdullah 'begs to differ' | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Jan 17: Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday took on the Indian Army for hailing crackdown on terror. After Northern Command Chief Lt Gen Ranbir Singh said that over 250 terrorists were killed and 54 were caught alive by security forces in 2018, the National Conference leader said that "a great year would be one in which no young man would join militancy". Earlier today, Lt Gen Singh told the media that 2018 has been a great year for the security forces as more than 250 terrorists were killed, 54 were caught alive, and four surrendered before them. Abdullah, however, had a different take to put forward. The NC leader tweeted: "I beg to differ, a great year would be one in which no young man would join militancy, no terrorists would be killed & no security personnel would lose their lives in encounters." He further said: "The compulsion of killing militants/terrorists shouldn't be treated as a cause for celebration." Earlier this month too, the ex-Jammu and Kashmir CM had expressed concern over the rise in inclination among Kashmiri youths to take the path of terrorism in the Kashmir Valley. "Shrinking space has pushed the youth to the wall. Compared to just a dozen or more youth drawn towards militancy in a span of years during my tenure as Chief Minister, far more than this number are taking to arms on a monthly basis." The National Conference leader had further said: "Terror activities have unfortunately become routine in the Valley. Due to lack of vision, it is spreading its tentacles in other parts as well." |
