Political parties resort to same trick to woo voters | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Mar 10: Ahead of polls, the political parties of the state are using old manifestos with a new twist to woo the voters. Before the 2014 assembly elections, the National Conference, Peoples Democratic Party, Bhartiya Janta Party, Congress made various promises with the people of the state. But as the BJP remained silent on these issue while being in power, the party has again resorted to same tactic to woo voters. In Jammu, the BJP is banking on eroding of Article 370, Article 35A, state holiday on birth anniversary of Maharaja Hari Singh, eradication of militancy, deportation of Rohingyas. These were also the same promises the party had made with electorate before 2014 polls. However, when in power, it remained silent on these issues. "Yes this is right these were also promises we had made with voters before polls. These issues are also in our poll agenda," a BJP leader said. Similarly, PDP president Mehbooba Mufti these days, has been issuing statements which seem to be damage control to save her party from the backlash in the upcoming polls in the state. During her election campaign in 2014 she once said the people of Kashmir will never sell their conscience to support the BJP. But then she formed alliance with the same party. In one of the statement, she said that once the PDP entered into a coalition with the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2015, "we had them agree, in the Agenda of Alliance, that the constitutional position of Jammu and Kashmir would not be fiddled with". She is again banking that BJP has to keep away from Kashmir. To gain the sympathy of voters, she claimed that PDP had taken such a huge risk by forging an alliance with the BJP. She also said that she had regret for making certain statements that hurt the sentiment of the people. "I was more angry than frustrated." She also had said that Hurriyat and Pakistan are stakeholders in the resolution of the Kashmir issue. Before 2014, PDP president and former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti would visit militants' families. In the manifesto before the previous polls, the party promised for dialogue with Pakistan, and Hurriyat, and demanded end of killings. The PDP has again been demanding revocation of the draconian Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, AFSPA. One of the major promises, the National Conference-oldest party of Jammu and Kashmir-made about restoration of the Autonomy. Ahead of upcoming polls, party's president Farooq Abdullah has urged Government of India (GoI) to invite Hurriyat and Pakistan for talks and asserted that if voted to power, their government on very first day would set up Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) to probe killings in the state. The NC leaders say restoration of Autonomy has always been the party's agenda. "We always advocate for talks with Pakistan and Hurriyat. The AFSPA has to be revoked and security forces have to be pulled out from civilian areas," the party leaders have said. Similarly, Congress party play soft separatists in Kashmir and talk about nationalism in Jammu. "The Congress don't want to make unhappy to any section of voters," a Congress leader said. |
