| NC: We aligned with BJP for funds | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Apr 24 Replying a barrage salvos fired by the Peoples Democratic Party for committing ideological comprises, the National Conference today came, for first time, with a plausible reason on why it joined the BJP in 1998 despite being on the opposite poles. The PDP president Mehbooba Mufti has for the first few days been putting the National Conference in an embarrassing and piquant situation by brandishing the party as power hungry and selling aspirations of the people for retaining power. The NC, however, continued to make counter allegations instead of clearing its stand on joining hands with the BJP at Center. However, for the first time the National Conference today tried to justify its position. A top party leader today said that the party had entered into an alliance with the BJP in 1998 to ensure smooth flow of Central funds to the state. NC had sided with the NDA Government in 1998 "simply" to ensure smooth flow of funds in plenty from the Centre, party general secretary Sheikh Nazir Ahmad said. He said party snapped ties soon after BJP disapproved the autonomy resolution passed by the assembly in 2000. Holding the saffron party responsible for the unrest in the country, Ahmad said its "negative postures and policies" are only disturbing country's unity and progress. "It is this devious policy which has caused unrest throughout the country, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir." Ahmad asked BJP not to thrust its will on NC on issues like Article 370 under which the state enjoys special status and restoration of internal autonomy to the state. Recalling the history of the state he said Maharaja Hari Singh had acceded the state to the Union of India 'conditionally.' BJP, subsequently, worked hand in hand with Congress for dismantling the edifice of semi-autonomous status of the state, he alleged adding the saffron party had played its communal card in doing so. BJP's claim that its crusade against Article 370 proved party's secular and democratic credential is only a hoax and NC does not approve it, he added. |
