'PDP sabotaged democratic process during its tenure'

JAMMU, Apr 13: People defying the poll boycott call and coming out to vote in large numbers in north Kashmir's Baramulla parliamentary constituency in the first phase of the elections has left the Pakistan stooges and their advocates red faced.
An analyst while talking to Early Times said, "Many areas of north Kashmir witnessing brisk polling has dispelled the notion created by the Peoples Democratic Party that holding elections in Kashmir is next to impossible."
He said, "When PDP was ruling the state it sabotaged the move to hold Panchayat and Urban Local Bodies polls in Kashmir citing security reasons. The party had created a notion that no space has been left for any democratic process and the only way out is to hold talks with pro-Pak elements, militants and Pakistan."
The analyst said that first phase of polling ending successfully has proven the PDP wrong. "It seems that PDP didn't want normalcy to return and it was pleading the cause of the separatists and the people sitting across the Line of Control," he added.
A Kashmir watcher said, "The government acting tough against Jamaat-e-Islami and JKLF has also helped the political process. The activists of these parties during the past few years played a pivotal role in orchestrating the street protests and enforcing boycott and shutdown calls. The Government of India banning these parties in the Valley has provided space to the mainstream parties to reach out to the people."
He said, "When these organisations (Jamaat and JKLF) were banned the Kashmir centric parties raised hue and cry and demanded that Centre should revoke the ban order. It's high time for the Valley based parties to decide on whose side they are. If they want to act like separatists then they should join their camp and give up all the privileges they are enjoying."
A politician said, "The PDP after coming into power left no stone unturned to appease the pro-Pakistan parties like Jamaat-e-Islami, JKLF and Hurriyat Conference. The PDP leaders during their tenure did not allow security agencies to act freely, and compelled them to remain soft towards militants and their sympathizers. The PDP pushed Kashmir to the edge and its pro-separatist leanings led to revival of militancy in south Kashmir." He said, "The Centre needs to take a note of what all PDP did during its tenure to strengthen the elements who preached secessionism and sedition." Recalling the interview of the then senior PDP minister, the politician said, "When by-polls in Anantnag parliamentary constituency were deferred in 2017 the then PDP minister had claimed that holding elections in Kashmir won't be possible till the GoI holds talks with the militants. Today he and his party stand exposed."
