On phone, PDP seeks votes in name of Jamaat, JKLF | | | Early Times Report srinagar, May 5: For the last leg of Parliament elections in Kashmir for Anantnag constituency seat, the Peoples Democratic Party has been seeking votes on phone with a promise of getting ban on Jamaat E Islami and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front revoked if brought back to power. The residents of Pulwama and Shopian district said in the recent past they had been getting phone calls from PDP that they should cast their vote to this particular party. Sources said the party was making use of recorded statements while making phone calls to the inhabitants of south Kashmir. "The caller which sounded like recording would say that apart from other issues ban on Jamaat and JKLF will have to be fought back. Peace can be restored only if PDP is voted to power," said a caller who received the phone call. Many such calls, mainly in the voice of senior PDP leader were received by mobile subscribers in south Kashmir in the last few days. It is pertinent to mention that the PDP has been openly condemning the imposition of ban on Jamaat and JKLF. A fortnight ago the PDP President Mehbooba Mufti personally led a protest march in south Kashmir against the ban on the separatist outfits. Jamaat is often seen as the supporter of the PDP in the elections. In the past, several experts on Kashmir including former RAW chief AS Dulat have hinted that Jamaat had been supporting PDP during elections to defeat National Conference. Most of the senior leaders of the Jamaat were seen as close to the Muftis and were accused of making their cadres vote for PDP. After the ban was imposed the PDP has been seeking its revocation by holding various protest marches. |
