Early Times Report
Jammu, June 29: This has happened for the first time that the government felt compelled to reprimand Srinagar Municipal Corporation for its pathetic functioning, censuring it over its failure in removing encroachments in the city.
The SMC, which already is in the news for its utter failure in keeping the beauty of Srinagar intact and alive, caught government's attention on Saturday when Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Baseer Ahmad Khan censured it and asked it why it has failed so badly in removing encroachments, thus turning the entire city a hub of chaos and lawlessness.
As per the reports coming to fore, Divisional Commissioner made the directions while reviewing traffic de-congestion measure taken across Srinagar. He directed SMC to deploy a dedicated contingent of officials headed by Chief Enforcement officer who will ensure that no encroachment occurs by the street vendors after they are removed.
Police will provide necessary support to the SMC as and when required. DC Srinagar shall provide Magistracy to the squads of SMC during anti-encroachment drive.
"SMC will utilize the services of vehicles mounted with loud speakers to create mass awareness for shopkeepers not to display their goods on footpaths and street vendors before initiating any legal action against them. Corporation will also use all formats of media to warn the unscrupulous elements for strict action including confiscation of their merchandise in case of violation of any kind", Khan further directed.
Strict action will be initiated against the officials of the SMC in case of laxity in removing of street vendors. SMC will freeze the registration process of new vendors till further orders and police shall initiate action against the unregistered street vendors. DC Srinagar and SSP Srinagar shall verify the status on ground and furnish a report on weekly basis to Divisional Commissioner Kashmir for further course of necessary action.
The Divisional Commissioner Kashmir stressed on the officers to ensure removal of all bottlenecks immediately for the traffic de-congestion across the capital city.
Meanwhile, as per the SMC insiders this is for the first time that such a wrath of the government has been witnessed against the corporation in is history. "The fact is that the SMC has completely failed to do its job. All it is known for is allowing illegal constructions in the city to galore, leaving common masses in lurch and plunging them into insurmountable predicament. Now when the government has acted tough, it is nonetheless a shame for SMC," says an official.
Also, there are reports that the Governor administration too is much annoyed with the way SMC is functioning after the last year's municipal polls. It is being observed that the Corporation has turned into a political hub wherein till recently there was a tussle being witnessed between the Mayor and the Deputy Mayor who now have buried their indifferences and entered into a bonhomie. However, neither their fight nor their 'bonhomie' has benefitted the already aggrieved city in anyway. The chaos continues to prevail.
