Rise in fatal road accidents cause of concern: Raman Suri
7/14/2019 10:31:11 PM
Early Times Report

JAMMU, July 14: Urging Governor Satya Pal Malik to immediately convene a meeting of transport department besides health, Public Works Department (PWD) and officials of all those associated with providing safe roads to people for chalking out a workable formula to end tragic and rising fatal road accidents in Jammu and Kashmir State, Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), state executive member of BJP, Raman Suri today expressed his grave concern over Ramban accident that consumed seven lives.
If negligence of drivers is the cause then government should sensitise them towards their duties and if roads are not safe then PWD engineers must be taken to task and above all if the public transport system has collapsed then the same should be changed but by all means this 'dance of death' on roads should be stopped. Several families have been ruined and after providing compensation and mere lip service no one ever bothers about families who lose their dear ones in such road accidents, Raman Suri asserted.
Raman Suri urged Governor to make officials be it of traffic, PWD, health, transport or allied departments accountable so that overloading, over-speeding, callous attitude of drivers, casual approach towards precious human lives, half-hearted works on roads and most importantly dereliction of duties are all done away with. These are primary causes of such accidents but we learn nothing and move on only to wait and watch for next such mishap knowingly that tax payers' money will compensate affected families.
The BJP leader said that Jammu and Kashmir State is on top priority of Prime Minister Narendra Modi when it comes to development as such there is no shortage of money. Secondly the state is thronged with millions of tourists including pilgrims and finally our own people commute in thousands of numbers on these roads in connection with their works. Keeping in view all these issues, such accidents should be a cause of concern for government and its machinery.
He hoped that the meeting convened by Governor in this connection will deliberate upon sensitive issue and hammer out a viable method to end fatal road accidents both in the cities and on highways besides state roads.
