Samba admin to focus on promotion of Bamboo cultivation, craft

Samba, August 22: District Administration Samba is laying major focus on promotion and development of Bamboo cultivation and trade through host of interventions under Restructured National Bamboo Mission (RNBM).
District Development Commissioner, Rohit Khajuria asked the stakeholders to coordinate in realizing the objectives envisioned under the RNMB. He was chairing a meeting of Bamboo cultivators and District Officers to discuss and review the achievements under Restructured National Bamboo Mission
He asked for increasing land cover under Bamboo cultivation and asked the revenue department and sub divisional administration of Vijaypur and Ghagwal to identify non-forest Government land for the purpose. The Forest department was asked to provide quality Bamboo saplings to farmers to get best quality produce. He also directed to facilitate display of Bamboo products made by local artisans for maximizing its outreach.
The DDC directed Handicrafts department to rope in master trainers of bamboo furniture making and motivate the farmers to setup units by providing financial assistance under various centrally sponsored schemes including PMEGP. The DDC stressed upon facilitation of farmers in providing them suitable selling price for their bamboo produce. He asked the industries department to promote their finished Bamboo product within and outside the state as there is a great demand for the same.
Meanwhile, the DDC also directed to construct a shed at appropriate location for facilitating local artisans for making bamboo products. He exhorted upon all concerned district officers to co-ordinate and put their earnest efforts to make the National Bamboo Mission a success in district.
The meeting was attended by Assistant commissioner, Revenue Kulbhushan Khajuria, Sub Divisional Magistrate Vijaypur, Vijay Kumar Sharma, Sub Divisional Magistrate Ghagwal, Ritu Mahajan, Chief Planning Officer, Sukhleen Kaur, Assistant Director Handicrafts Sonam Verma, Chief Horticulture Officer, Chief Agriculture Officer, Divisional Forest Officer and Bamboo cultivators of Samba district.
Earlier, the meeting was appraised regarding present status of Bamboo cultivation in district and the issues faced by cultivators which including unavailability of good quality bamboo saplings, absence of market linkage, Lack of bamboo cultivation knowledge and low selling price in market.
